Friend or Foe?

Readers can evaluate a story by asking themselves questions like:

*Why has the author included these details?

*Why has the author described the character this way?

*Why has the author used poetic language, humor,or suspense?

Asking these types of questions as you read will help increase your understanding and appreciation of the story, and the author’s purpose in writing it.

            Author’s Purpose

Authors write to:

*Entertain readers using humor or exciting action.

*Inform readers of facts.

*Persuade readers using convincing words.

The author’s purpose influences the way the text is organized, the choice of words, and even the sentence structure.
